The Australian Federal Government – Department of Health, Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) runs a Scheduling Scheme for all medicines and poisons available to the public.

The Scheduling Scheme is a national classification system that controls how medicines and poisons are made available to the public. Medicines and poisons are classified into Schedules according to the level of regulatory control over the availability of the medicine or poison, required to protect public health and safety.

How a medicine/poison (e.g. CBD and THC oils) is scheduled affects if and how it is distributed and any criminal penalties if this is not followed. Schedules cover everything from Schedule 2 Pharmacy medicines (e,g, certain cold medicines) to Schedule 9 Prohibited substances (e.g. Heroin).
